Slab City | California

Slab City is known as the "last free place in America" which resides in Southern California. In 2015, I went to this hippy commune and I can say it's honestly the most beautiful place I have ever visited. One of my favorite things about Slab City was how friendly everyone in the community was. While visiting, residents would greet and wave to us as we drove by. It was beautiful to get to know such pure people as well as see their homes and their artwork. My obsession with the town was driven by the movie "Into The Wild" which is a film about a young man leaving everything behind to live without money and to be free from society. After many years of researching and understanding the beauty of Slab City, I finally had the opportunity to go and get a taste of what life is like within the city and I must say, I have to go back !

Slab City is mostly known for "Salvation Mountain" which is a man-made mountain created by Slab City resident, Leonard Knight. Leonard Knight created Salvation Mountain as his gift to god. The coolest feature to this man-made mountain is that there is human sized tunnels throughout the entire mountain which also has art work and biblical quotes painted about. Not only that but you can also climb the mountain ( as long as you stay on the yellow pathway ) which allows for awesome pictures and a great view of the desert.

Although Leonard Knight is the more known artist of Slab City - there is many other's who reside within the community. Mostly all of the homes have artwork displayed outside for tourist or new residents to check out. The awesome thing about Slab City and the artwork is the environmentally friendly aspect to it. Mostly all of the garbage found in the community and surrounding desert is used towards the art that is created within the community! The use of garbage in the artwork is so unique and different than anything I have ever seen.

Slab City is a must-see destination if you are travelling throughout California. It is also a great location for photo-shoots and day trips (if you live nearby). Make sure you leave donations while passing through as everything in the city is free and the community needs funding to be kept alive. You can also donate money online at https://www.gofundme.com/http-www-sccgi-o !

Thank you for reading - I hope you enjoyed! xox
